Email programs such as Gmail and Outlook operate sophisticated AI algorithms to identify and block spam. However, these programs are not always accurate and from time to time fraudulent emails end up in your main inbox. In this article, you get five tips to recognize and block email scams.
  1. Do not open emails from unknown senders If a random person contacts you to send money or love, don't believe it, just delete it.
  2. Check sender's email address If you get an email from a company, friend or a colleague, check if the email address is correct and legit. If it is not, delete it. Often, scammers pretend to be customer service from a company, but the email address is registered with a suspicious domain name which tries to mimic the real one e.g. info@c01nbas3.com
  3. Don't click on urls in emails And if you do, verify if the link is legit. Look at the domain name in the browser window. Chances are that you were not taken to the place you expected (e.g. weird or fake domain name). In that case, close your browser windows and delete the email.
  4. Use a spam email address If you're signing up on a less important website, use a secondary email address. This way, you're real email address will get less spam.
  5. Use custom names for particular websites If you sign up for a less important website, try to limit the personal details that you provide. Enter the website's name as your first name. If your email address is sold to spammers, you will be able to identify where it's coming from.
